Microsoft has now made Microsoft Entra External ID generally available for Power Pages, and this is an important update for anyone building external-facing websites on the Microsoft platform. In Power Pages, Entra External ID brings a low-code way to configure external authentication, brand the sign-in and registration experience, support multifactor authentication, and integrate with other identity providers.
The timing of this update matters even more because Azure AD B2C is no longer available to purchase for new customers as of May 1, 2025. Existing customers can continue using Azure AD B2C, the current product experience remains unchanged, and Microsoft says support continues until at least May 2030.
So this is not just another Power Pages feature update.
If you are starting a new Power Pages implementation in 2025, identity should now be one of the first things you think about, not something you leave for later.
Why this matters
When we talk about Power Pages projects, most conversations start with pages, forms, content, integrations, and design. But for most real-world websites, especially customer, partner, member, or citizen portals, identity ends up being one of the most important building blocks.
Who can sign in?
How do they register?
Can the experience match the company’s branding?
Can we support MFA?
Can we support external users without making the experience clunky?
These are not side questions. These are core design decisions.
That is where Entra External ID becomes important for Power Pages. Microsoft positions it as a low-code identity option for Power Pages that supports branding of sign-in and registration pages, MFA, and integration with other identity providers.
Why the Azure AD B2C change matters
A lot of people will immediately ask, does this mean Azure AD B2C is gone?
Not exactly.
Microsoft is very clear here. Azure AD B2C is not being renamed to Entra External ID. Entra External ID is Microsoft’s next-generation CIAM platform. Also, Azure AD B2C is no longer available for new customer purchases from May 1, 2025, but current customers can continue using it, and Microsoft will continue supporting it until at least May 2030.
That means the message is pretty simple:
- If you already have Azure AD B2C in place, you do not need to panic.
- If you are planning a new Power Pages site, you should be looking seriously at Entra External ID.
And honestly, that is the bigger takeaway for most new projects.
What this means for new Power Pages implementations
For new implementations, the identity conversation should change from day one.
Instead of treating authentication as something to bolt on later, it now makes sense to include it in the early design discussion. For example:
- Are users customers, partners, vendors, members, or citizens?
- Will they self-register?
- Do you need social identity providers?
- Do you need MFA?
- Do you want the sign-in experience to feel like part of the site, not a disconnected login page?
- Will you need flexibility as the portal grows?
These are the kinds of questions that shape the long-term success of a portal.
Power Pages has always been strong when paired with Dataverse, Dynamics 365, and the rest of the Microsoft stack. Having a more current external identity story makes that overall platform story stronger.
What this means for existing Azure AD B2C customers
If you already have a Power Pages website using Azure AD B2C, this update is still relevant, but the message is different.
This is not an emergency migration story.
Microsoft states that existing Azure AD B2C customers can continue using the product, the product experience remains unchanged, and operational commitments like SLAs, security updates, and compliance remain unchanged as well. Microsoft has also said more information, including migration plans, will be made available.
So for existing customers, the better approach is to stay informed and be intentional. Do not ignore the direction Microsoft is taking, but also do not treat this as a rushed replacement exercise.
Microsoft Entra External ID gives Power Pages a stronger story there. And with Azure AD B2C no longer available for new customer purchases, this becomes even more important for anyone planning a new implementation in 2025 and beyond.
For new Power Pages projects, this is definitely something worth understanding early.
Happy integrating!
